Rodriguez, Ordonez among names that changed Detroit

DETROIT -- Ivan Rodriguez heard it. So did Magglio Ordonez.

When both were looking at the Tigers as free agents a year apart, Tigers owner Mike Ilitch promised them he would build a winner in Detroit. Both took Ilitch and president/general manager Dave Dombrowski at their word. Both, understandably, are glad they did.

For all that has gone right in the Tigers' rebuilding process since 119 losses in 2003, their maneuvers through the free-agent market for veteran players have turned out to beat the odds on the open market. What they lacked when they looked over their system each season, they managed to fill from outside the organization. Their successes have been big ones -- some Tigers fans would argue Ordonez earned his salary on his walk-off home run last Saturday alone to win the ALCS -- and their lack of success hasn't been.

Once Pudge's arrival moved Inge to the infield, Inge later admitted, he felt the catching duties lifted off his shoulders and became a better overall player because of it.
