오클랜드 불펜편입니다. 지난해 오프시즌에 불펜 보강을 허드슨과 멀더 트레이드때 키코 칼레로와 후안 크루즈를 영입을 통해 했었는데요. 두 선수가 셋업맨 역할을 맡을 것으로 그때는 예상되었었는데, 1년만에 많은 변화가 생겼습니다. 칼레로가 후반기에는 잘 던져주었지만, 다른 불펜멤버들이 시즌중에 착실하게 많이 보강되었다는 생각입니다. 건강하게 지난해 후반기 수준만 보여주어도, 강력한 불펜이라는 생각이 듭니다.

A's have luxury of deep, versatile relief corps

OAKLAND -- Technically, the A's haven't added anyone to their bullpen this offseason. Every member of the projected relief corps for 2006 was with the club at the end of 2005.

Oakland did add and subtract, however, and the result is what manager Ken Macha and general manager Billy Beane believe might be the club's deepest and most versatile bullpen in years.

The ultimate bullpen luxury, of course, is a near-automatic closer. The A's appear to have that, too, if Huston Street's rookie year is an indication of things to come. Thrust into the closer's role when Octavio Dotel opted for season-ending surgery in May, Street saved 23 games -- he was 18-for-18 after the All-Star break -- on his way to sweeping the American League's myriad rookie of the year awards.
물론 불펜 최고의 자리는 클로저다. 허스턴 스트리트가 보여준 루키시즌이 그 활약의 시작에 불과한 것이라면, A's는 최고 수준의 마무리를 보여하게 되는 것이다.
The A's are hoping that Street, who went 5-1 with a 1.72 ERA, can come close to duplicating those numbers in 2006 as the anchor of a bullpen that also will feature setup men Justin Duchscherer, Kiko Calero and Jay Witasick, Swiss army knife Kirk Saarloos and converted starter Joe Kennedy.

"Assuming we're healthy, Kenny's not going to have his hands tied very often," Beane said.

The lone departure was lefty Ricardo Rincon, who signed with the Cardinals as a free agent in December. Rincon had some success in his 3 1/2-year stint with the A's, posting a 3.25 ERA in 2003 and a 3.68 ERA in 2004, but he slipped to 4.34 last season and was anything but versatile. A classic lefty specialist, Rincon rarely worked more than an inning and often faced one or two hitters; he totaled 37 1/3 innings in 67 appearances.

Filling the vacancy is Oakland's Mr. Versatility, Saarloos, who went 10-8 in 27 starts as the fifth man in the 2005 rotation and was bumped to the bullpen when the A's acquired righty Esteban Loaiza as a free agent.

A stud closer in college, Saarloos has been used in virtually every pitching capacity as a big leaguer. He started 17 games for the Astros in 2002, his debut season, but made 32 of his 36 appearances the following year in relief. Traded to Oakland in April 2004, he filled in for injured starter Tim Hudson for five games before elbow trouble ended Saarloos' season, and he won the fifth starters' job last spring.

As the No. 5 man, Saarloos often was pushed back in the rotation or simply skipped; he pitched on 10 days of rest once, nine days twice and eight days twice. He also made two relief appearances, posting a 0.00 ERA over three innings. And not once, Macha noted, did he complain about his role.

As will Kennedy, who is the only southpaw in the current bullpen mix. A starter his entire five-year career before being acquired in a midseason trade last season, Kennedy worked out of the bullpen immediately after the trade and went 2-0 with a 3.00 ERA in 11 appearances before taking over for injured starter Rich Harden.

Kennedy's lack of relief experience appears to be of little concern to the A's.

"We're fine with Joe as the only lefty down there," Beane said. "He was a very good reliever for us before Rich got hurt, and I expect him to be a very good reliever for us again. He has all the tools for success."

Rivaling Saarloos' versatility is Duchscherer, another converted starter. Although he made only 17 relief appearances in eight seasons in the Minors, he's established himself as a jack of all trades in Oakland's bullpen, rising from his role as a long man early in the 2004 season to an All-Star in 2005, when he went 7-4 with a 2.21 ERA in 65 games.

"Duke can and will do a little bit of everything," Macha said. "He's extremely valuable because he can take the ball in any situation."

Getting the ball mostly in late-game situations will be Calero, whose .216 opponents' batting average in 2005 actually elevated his career OBA -- to .203. Despite early elbow problems that inflated his numbers and forced him to miss 11 games from April 17-28 and sent him to the disabled list from May 9-June 5, he finished with a 3.23 ERA and a 4-1 record in 58 games. His ERA was 2.14 and his OBA .193 after returning from the DL.

"One of the things I like about our bullpen is that the versatility will allow me to give guys more days off," Macha said. "That's going to really help a guy like Kiko, who we probably had to rely on a little too much early [in 2005]."

And, finally, there is Witasick, who was acquired in the same trade that brought Kennedy; he signed a two-year contract in the offseason. Although he struggled in the second of back-to-back appearances (4.67 ERA in 12 outings vs. 2.42 in his 48 other appearances), Witasick finished with a career-low .223 OBA and a 3.25 ERA in 28 games with Oakland.
마지막으로 케네디 트레이드때 데려온 위타식이 있다. 이번 오프시즌에 2년 계약을 했고, 연투를 할때의 두 번째 등판에서 부진한 모습을 보였지만, (연투할 때 두 번째 등판으로 총 12번 등판에서 4.67, 다른 48번의 등판에서 2.42) 오클랜드에서의 28게임에서 방어율 3.25와 커리어에서 가장 낮은 .223의 피안타율을 기록했다.
Witasick's average of 10.37 strikeouts per nine innings gives Macha yet another kind of weapon.

"Every bullpen needs swing-and-miss guys," Macha said. "Jay is one of those guys, and like the rest of our guys, he can do a lot of things.
