오랜만에 보는 허드슨의 소식입니다. 비록 지난시즌에 허드슨이 기대만큼 해준것은 아니었지만, 지난시즌만 보았을때 오클랜드와 애틀랜타의 트레이드는 한마디로 '빌리빈을 상대로 한 슈어홀츠의 사기극'수준이었는데요. 아직 결론을 내리기엔 좀 이른 감은 있죠. 트레이드 득실을 떠나 애틀랜타로서는 참 좋은 선수를 데려간 것 같습니다. 묵묵하면서 꾸준한 선수이기도 하지만, 인격적으로도 많이 성숙한 선수라는 생각이 듭니다.

Righty talks about his first year in Atlanta and what lies ahead
ChopTalk: You and your wife, Kim, were involved in Operation Turkey Drop, delivering turkey and all the trimmings to people in need living near the stadium, and then you helped prepare Thanksgiving dinner at the annual Feed the Hungry dinner at Turner Field. Why were those things important to you?

Hudson: It's something we've always liked to be a part of. It's easy to write a check and be done with it, but it's even more meaningful when you can give of your time and self. We find that we get so much from doing that.

Hudson: It was, in terms of living close to family and friends and having them be able to come to watch me play more than when I lived on the West Coast. But the results of playing here weren't what I hoped for. Every year you don't make it to the World Series is another year you didn't attain your ultimate goal.

The goal of making it to the World Series is a realistic one for the Braves. But winning the Series isn't easy, obviously, so you have to find satisfaction in other things. Like this year, with all the young guys coming up and contributing, seeing guys have good seasons -- all those things contribute to your satisfaction. But even a young team wants to win it all.

ChopTalk: You seemed like a ringleader for the rookies.

Hudson: You want good team chemistry and want everyone in the clubhouse to get along with each other. I had a lot of fun with these young guys, because I remember what I had in Oakland. I had a great situation out there. Everyone who came through used to tell us to enjoy it while we could, because not every team is like that.

I saw a lot of the same stuff with the guys here, especially the young guys. I wanted to do whatever I could to help keep that team chemistry. It's something general managers can't buy. It's either there or it's not, but players can encourage it. It's great to be on a team of guys who like one another on and off the field, who want to succeed together. You want to be on a team where when you win, it's like you're winning with your brothers rather than just 25 individuals.

ChopTalk: So how would you rate your performance last season compared to previous seasons and your expectations?

Hudson: I don't give myself a great grade. If you just looked at the numbers, I guess they're OK, but [my performance] wasn't what I expected. I never really felt like I got in a good groove.

Hudson: I don't really know. Maybe it was missed time, or a new team and new league. I'm not sure, but I just know that this season I want to go out and give my team a chance to win every time. There were times last season where I gave the game away, and it was too late to come back. I want to be the pitcher they signed.

ChopTalk: You've been on the disabled list the last two seasons due to your left oblique. Is that a concern for you, and what, if anything, can you do to try to keep it from being a problem?

Hudson: It's really not a concern. The two issues were actually two different injuries, though they were on the same side. In 2004, the problem was lower, more of a hip flexor. Last season, the strain was in my rib cage. I'm doing a lot of work on strengthening my core muscles, a lot of abdominal stuff that strengthens the back muscles. [The oblique] is not a problem.

Hudson: I was pretty excited to be there, and it took me longer to make adjustments. I probably tried to do too much and got settled down too late. I felt pretty bad. I was glad I was able to settle down and pitch well in Game 4. Who's to say what would have happened if we had won Game 1.

Hudson: I still had gas in the tank, but [Kyle] Farnsworth had pitched well, and he was ready to go. I had [made] 100 pitches and was working on short rest, but I'll always say I can keep going. To be honest, it was one game that I didn't mind handing the ball over to Farnsworth, because he'd done so well in those cases before.

But there isn't going to be an Auburn shrine or anything like that!
