It's the historic day for the A's who are wearing totally new look. It's new start and a kind of reconstruction for the franchise, which has been belonged to the small maket places. So meaningful game for A's turned out to be their side after almost 4 hour-game was over. This was not their home opening game, but the first game with new look. Early in the game, Retriever took a lead against Orioles with the 2-run home run by Eric Chavez in the top of the 2nd inning. But after that, while all A's batters struggled to add the score and wide the score gap, Orioles made the game tie in the 5th inning by combining several hits. Two teams failed to get scores until regular inning was over and two more innings lasted. At last in top of the 12th inning, lead-off hitter Scott Posednik set the table for finishing long-night game, with the runner on 2nd base and 1 out, Juan Pierre, who had had no hit before today, hit the winning-hit what really team needed from him.
A's opening day starter Pedro Martinez, who was traded from Mets on purpose to give the exprience and leadership to Oakland pitching staffs, completed his role in his first start by giving up only 2 runs by 8th inning. with 8 hits allowed, he didn't seem to be in the best condition. He managed the game effectively and gave the chance to new team for winning on the stage of new history. Among the batters, Oakland franchise player, Eric Chavez had two hits including important home run early in the game.
Pedro Martinez was selected as a player of the game. After the game, he interviewed with media about his move to Oakland and his pitching today.
"I am pumped up with everything here. Fresh atmosphere always exists here and there for this team and it's new and fantastic challenge for me to play for this team. I like these guys who are playing with me and I like the fans and franchise that was just newly decorated. I am sure that great expectation from all people here will be translated to the bright future. I am really proud of my role in the part of the dynamic challenge."
"Today a bit of control problem bothered me to pitch the spot where I wanted to pitch. But that's ok. It was normal day that I was unlucky. From the experience of the career, I have learned to make the way when I have no way to go in the game. Kendall gave me big help to keep myself on the mound for 8th innings."
