With fragile Bonds, Alou and Finley, it'll be the 40-40-40 club

SAN FRANCISCO -- It all comes down to No. 25. Again.
또다시 본즈에게 모든 게 달렸다.

Barry Bonds' 41-year-old knees are at the heart -- well, make that ligaments and cartilage -- of the Giants' 2006 season, and if those creaky old bones can stay viable, so will San Francisco.

원격 검침 시스템 (AMR)

가정에서 전기를 쓰게 되면, 쓰는 양 만큼 전력량이 늘어나게 되는데 그 양을 측정하기 위해서 가정마다 계량기가 설치되게 됩니다. 한달에 한번 주기로 그 계량기의 값을 읽어서 요금계산 및 청구를 하게 되는데요. 검침원이 매달 그 값을 읽기 위해 가정을 방문하곤 하는 것을 알고 계실 것입니다. 하지만, 미래에는 검침원의 존재는 과거의 역사책에서나 찾아볼 수 있는 존재가 될지도 모릅니다. 바로 원격검침시스템(AMR) 덕분인데요. AMR시스템은 전자식 계량기를 설치하고, 여러 통신망을 활용해, 직접 검침을 하기 위해 각 가정을 찾아다니고, 계량기를 점검할 필요가 없이, 원격에서 그 데이터를 전송받음으로써, 요금 업무 처리에 활용할 수가 있도록 해줍니다.  


● AMR이란?

AMR은 Automatic Meter Reading의 약자로 자동으로 데이터를 취득하는 것을 일컫습니다. 간단한 원리인데요. 우리가 핸드폰으로 문자메세지에 ‘5465’라는 숫자를 입력해서 다른 핸드폰으로 전송을 할때 CDMA 무선망을 이용해서 전송을 하게 됩니다. 또한 컴퓨터에서 메신저를 통해서 자연스럽게 서로 대화를 나눌 수 있는 것도 인터넷망을 통해서 데이터를 주고 받기 때문입니다. 이처럼 서로 데이터를 주고 받을 수 있는 유선망, 무선망 할 것 없이 다양합니다.

AMR시스템의 기본 원리는 계량기에서 취득되는 전력량 데이터를 통신용 단말기인 모뎀이 AMR데이터를 수집하고 저장하는 중앙 서버로 그 데이터를 전송하는 것입니다. 이 과정에서 여러 가지 통신망을 필요로 하는 것이고, 통신망의 구성은 통신환경 및 경제적인 여건이 고려가 됩니다.


● AMR 현황 및 시스템 구성

현재 한국전력에서는 고압 고객들을 대상으로 AMR서비스를 진행중이며, 일부 지역에서는 PLC통신을 이용한 AMR시범사업이 시행되고 있습니다. 고압 고객이란 월사용 전력량이 100KW이상인 고객을 말하며, 주로 회사나 기관 등의 고객이 그에 해당합니다. 아직 경제적인 이유로 일반 가정에까지 시스템이 확대되지 못하고 있지만, 차츰 자동화율을 높여가고 있으며, PLC통신과 같은 저렴하고 효율적인 통신시스템의 성공적인 정착을 위해 다양한 시범사업시도 및 연구개발을 진행중입니다.

현재 AMR에 이용되는 통신망으로서는, 위에 언급한 PLC통신이 시범적으로 일부 주택가를 대상으로 한 AMR시스템에 이용되고 있으며, 그 외에 CDMA 및 인터넷망이 사용되고 있습니다. 예를 들어, SK TELECOM이나 LG TELECOM의 모뎀을 통해 전자식 계량기에서 취득한 데이터를 무선기지국으로 전송을 하게 되고, 기지국에서 전송받은 데이터는 SK TELECOM이나 LG TELECOM의 중계서버로 전달됩니다. AMR데이터를 전체적으로 수집하는 AMR서버로의 전송은 각 이동통신사의 중계서버에서 중앙서버까지 전용회선 구축을 통해 안정적인 통신환경을 제공하고 있습니다. AMR은 자체 소프트웨어를 통해 데이터를 일반PC에서 원격관리할 수 있으며, 요금계산 및 처리 프로그램과 연계되어 업무의 효율적으로 처리하도록 해 줍니다.


● AMR시스템의 발전방향

PLC통신을 통한 AMR시범사업의 성공여부는 AMR의 조속한 확대적용에 큰 영향을 미칠 것입니다. 통신환경 및 경제적인 문제 등으로 인하여 AMR을 확대 적용하는데 한계가 있습니다.

고객의 요금 청구와 같은 민감한 사항을 다루는 업무이기 때문에, 안정적인 무선통신환경이 제공되어야 하며, 그러기 위해서는 고가의 단말설비 구비 및 서버 구축이 필요하며, 지속적인 개선이 요구됩니다. 또한 유선 및 무선 통신망 구축이 열악한 지역이 아직 많이 상존하고 있습니다. 경제성을 고려하지 않는 시스템 확장은 청구요금보다 회선사용료가 더 많이 지불되는 ‘배보다 배꼽이 더 큰’상황을 초래하게 됩니다.

그런 의미에서 전력선 통신(PLC)은 AMR의 확대적용을 통한 업무의 효율화에 획기적인 성과를 가져올 것입니다. 이미 전력선이 구축되어 있는 곳에서, 자유자재로 전력량 데이터를 불러 올 수 있다면, 통신환경이 열악한 지역에서도 손쉽게 데이터를 취득할 수 있으며, 회선사용료를 따로 지불하지 않음으로써, 경제성 재고에 큰 도움이 될 것입니다.

A's comfortable having aplenty in outfield

OAKLAND -- Center field at McAfee Coliseum is big, but it's not big enough for three center fielders, and the A's have three and a half among their five outfielders.
맥카피 콜리세움의 센터 필드는 넓지만, 세명의 중견수들에게는 그다지 넓은 건 아니다. A's는 5명의 외야수를 데리고 있는데, 그 중 3.5명이 중견수이다.

Not a problem, insists manager Ken Macha. In fact, he says, it's a blessing.
켄 마차는 전혀 문제가 없다고 주장한다. 오히려 장점이라고 말한다.

"If you've been a center fielder, that means you've probably been the best outfielder on your team," he explains. "And if you've been your team's best outfielder, you're probably not going to have any problem with the corner spots. The angles are different and the ball's coming off the bat [differently], but if you've been a center fielder, you know how to go get the ball. And that's the No. 1 thing in the outfield: Can you go get the ball? We've got a bunch of guys who can."

It's called depth, and Macha isn't used to having it. Sure, he had five outfielders -- six at times -- in his first year at the helm in Oakland (2003), but that actually was a problem. It was a rotating cast that featured, at various times, tempestuous Terrence Long and Jose Guillen, journeymen Chris Singleton and Billy McMillon, ineffective Adam Piatt and David McCarty, oft-injured Jermaine Dye, erratic Eric Byrnes and diminished Ron Gant.

That's certainly the glass-half-full view. Barring a trade, each member of the outfield quintet Macha will have at his disposal in 2006 -- Mark Kotsay, Milton Bradley, Nick Swisher, Jay Payton and Bobby Kielty -- is, in his words, "a quality Major League outfielder who could start for a number of teams out there." And with the exception of Payton, who turned 33 in November, all of them are 30 or younger.

That makes Payton, who hit 13 homers with 42 RBIs in 69 games with the A's last year, the fourth outfielder, and Kielty, who played in 116 games last season, the fifth.

When Kotsay needs a break, for instance, Bradley or Payton, both of whom are natural center fielders, can take over -- creating an opening for Payton or Kielty on either corner. Similarly, Payton or Kielty can take over on either corner when Bradley gets a blow.

If Kotsay and Bradley need rest on the same day, Payton will be in center with Kielty and Swisher (who played center field in the Minors) on the corners. When Thomas gets a day off, Swisher can move to first base, where he played in college, allowing Macha to move first baseman Dan Johnson to DH -- creating another opening in the outfield.

Johnson and Swisher figure to get plenty of rest, too, and Kielty and Payton likely will fill in at DH from time to time.

Put another way, if Thomas plays 120 games, Kotsay and Bradley 130, and Swisher and Johnson 135, that leaves 160 games of playing time open. And that's with the fairly bold assumption that everyone will be healthy all year.
다른 식으로 생각해보자. 토마스가 120게임을 뛰고, 캇세이와 브래들 리가 130게임, 스위셔와 존슨이 135게임을 뛴다고 봤을때, 여전히 160게임을 뛸 자리가 남아있다. 이것 역시 시즌내내 모두가 건강하다는 긍정적인 전제하에서 그렇다.

"I feel like I say this about every area of the team, but it's true: We're going to have a lot of options on a daily basis," Macha says. "If we do this thing right, everyone's going to be happy when it's all said and done."

Isn't it very risky to go with so many unknowns in the rotation all at once? Zach Duke and Paul Maholm did have success in their first go-around, but so did Edwin Jackson three years ago. Factor in that Kip Wells was less than spectacular a year ago, Oliver Perez had a 5.85 ERA and there is no definitive fifth starter and I'm worried here. I think we need more consistency in the rotation. Don't you think so?

For all of the work that the Pirates did this past offseason to improve the offense and the bullpen, the starting rotation remains a huge question mark. And if this team is to have a legitimate shot at finishing the season above .500, the starters must carry a heavy load.

His command was erratic, he was no longer able to simply blow his fastball by hitters and a lot of the bite was missing from his slider.

How quickly Duke and Maholm are able to rebound from the lumps they are sure to take during the upcoming season will go a long way towards determining their success in 2006 and beyond. They must be willing and able to counter the adjustments made by the opposition.

But it is also a potentially volatile group, one that could carry or bury the Bucs in 2006.

Castillo struck out 33 fewer times in 2005 than in his rookie season in 13 less at-bats, and he had just nine whiffs in his final 75 at-bats before the injury.

피츠버그의 외야수편입니다. 무엇보다 제이슨 베이가 지난해와 같은 포스를 계속 이어가준다면, 케이시,버니츠 영입이 어느정도 효과를 보면서 나름대로 짜임새있는 타선이 될텐데요. 베이의 활약이 관심이 갑니다. 버니츠에 대해서는 글쎄요.. 크렉윌슨이 부상의 여파가 있긴 하지만, 윌슨보다 업그레이드 되었다고 볼 수 있을지는 모르겠습니다. 여튼 리틀필드는 말처럼 선수층의 깊이 면에서는 보탬이 될 듯 합니다.

Emerging superstar Bay leads skilled group of players

Pirates general manager Dave Littlefield can't help but like the outfield he has assembled.

He also ranked among the top 10 hitters in the National League in batting average, runs, doubles, hits (183), walks (95), multi-hit games (54), total bases (335), on-base percentage (.402) and slugging percentage (.559).
