A's comfortable having aplenty in outfield

OAKLAND -- Center field at McAfee Coliseum is big, but it's not big enough for three center fielders, and the A's have three and a half among their five outfielders.

Not a problem, insists manager Ken Macha. In fact, he says, it's a blessing.

It's called depth, and Macha isn't used to having it. Sure, he had five outfielders -- six at times -- in his first year at the helm in Oakland (2003), but that actually was a problem. It was a rotating cast that featured, at various times, tempestuous Terrence Long and Jose Guillen, journeymen Chris Singleton and Billy McMillon, ineffective Adam Piatt and David McCarty, oft-injured Jermaine Dye, erratic Eric Byrnes and diminished Ron Gant.

That's certainly the glass-half-full view. Barring a trade, each member of the outfield quintet Macha will have at his disposal in 2006 -- Mark Kotsay, Milton Bradley, Nick Swisher, Jay Payton and Bobby Kielty -- is, in his words, "a quality Major League outfielder who could start for a number of teams out there." And with the exception of Payton, who turned 33 in November, all of them are 30 or younger.

Yet the glass-half-empty set could make those same points to back the notion that it might be too much of a good thing. The A's have made it clear that they plan to start Swisher in left, Kotsay in center and Bradley in right. That makes Payton, who hit 13 homers with 42 RBIs in 69 games with the A's last year, the fourth outfielder, and Kielty, who played in 116 games last season, the fifth.

When Kotsay needs a break, for instance, Bradley or Payton, both of whom are natural center fielders, can take over -- creating an opening for Payton or Kielty on either corner. Similarly, Payton or Kielty can take over on either corner when Bradley gets a blow.
