Yankees, avoid sweep (HH2004) 야구2006. 7. 1. 19:04

Yankees could avoid sweep by A's in the extra inning. Into 8th inning, Yankees led the game by 3-2 and they almost escaped from sweep. But in the top of the 8th inning, A's second baseman Brian Roberts hit a game-tying home run against Yankees starting pitcher Mike Mussina, who pitched really well giving up only 2 runs into 7th inning.
Yankees was put to the wall in front of their home fans when game was even. A's was in better place, winning previous two games, so a lot of pressure was on Yankees players' shoulers. Jason Giambi, former Athletics, saved the team from the losing streak and sweep hitting walk-off hit in 11th.
A's starting pitcher Pedro Martinez had another good appearance today in his 7th start of the season. In previous his 6 starts for the season, he has not been allowed more than 3 runs per a game, respectively. All were Quality Start. He added one more QS to his career today, allowing only 3 runs while throwing 8 innings. He scattered 3 walks and fanned 8 batters.
For pitcher part, Oliver Perez, who blowed Zambrano's win yesterday, allowing game-tying home run to Jonny Damon, couldn't held the Yankees offense. His condition looks good today before getting into 11th inning. In 10th inning, he struck out all opposite batters he faced.
