피츠버그의 불펜입니다. 큰 움직임으로 호세 메사를 내보내는 대신 로베르토 헤르난데즈와 다마소 마르테를 영입해 더 업그레이된 모습입니다. 마이크 곤잘레스가 비록 마무리 경험은 없지만, 데이비드 리스키처럼 되지는 않을것 같다는 생각이 듭니다. 불펜을 비롯해 파이어리츠의 전체적인 전력이 최근 몇년간 중에서는 제일 나아보이는데, 올시즌이 기대가 됩니다.

New closer Gonzalez anchors Pirates' relief corps

In some ways, a team's bullpen is the baseball equivalent to the foundation of a house.
You don't really think much about it until the cracks show and the building begins to lean or crumble.

General manager Dave Littlefield, the architect of the Pirates roster, wasn't about to overlook this key area when he began his offseason overhaul. In addition to his more publicized moves to add first baseman Sean Casey, third baseman Joe Randa and outfielder Jeromy Burnitz to his lineup, Littlefield also made shoring up his bullpen a top priority.

Littlefield replaced departed right-handers Jose Mesa, Rick White and Brian Meadows -- a trio that combined to make 191 relief appearances last season -- by signing free agent right-hander Roberto Hernandez, trading for southpaw Damaso Marte and inking veteran relievers such as right-handers Giovanni Carrara, Terry Adams and Scott Strickland and lefty C.J. Nitkowski to Minor League deals.

"Managers will orient their lineups to go with a lot of right-handers against our left-handed pitching," said Littlefield. "You've got to counter that with having a stronger right-handed side of the bullpen."

Perhaps more importantly, Hernandez will serve as an insurance policy in case lefty Mike Gonzalez falters in his new role as the Bucs closer.

Marte and John Grabow should give the Pirates a similarly imposing duo from the left side. Marte, 30, developed into one of the top left-handed relievers in the American League after being traded from the Pirates to the White Sox just prior to the start of the 2002 campaign. In his four years with Chicago, Marte was 14-12 with 31 saves and a 2.81 ERA in 279 appearances. He has held opposing left-handed hitters to a .200 batting average in his career.

"Hernandez helps in that he gives us another strong right-hander with Torres," said Littlefield. "Marte, particularly having saved a few games and how effective he's been against left-handed hitters, helps to give us depth with Grabow and Gonzalez. Overall, it gives [manager] Jim Tracy more weapons and more options in the later innings."

"We'll see how it goes. Gonzalez is a talented guy and he has a lot of desire to do this. We're going to give him a chance."
